Laser Beak Man

Have not heard of Tim Sharp?  Tim is one amazing young guy.

Since hearing about him and seeing his work a few years ago I have been casually following his efforts. Tim, despite being autistic, writes about the pursuits of Laser Beak Man “the coolest super hero to ever hit the world”.

This year he was nominated for Young Australian of the Year

Stop past his site to see what Tim has been up to recently. It can be found at: Laser Beak Man

Footy Finals

You would almost have to be living in a vacuum to not realize this weekend is footy finals.

For those that do live in a vacuum or before now were completely unaware the Sydney Swans play West Coast Eagles in the AFL final Saturday. For a game that has its roots in Victoria there is local disappointment with no home team to cheer for. The MCG will be filled to the rafters in any case.

Of more interest for residents of Brisbane is Sunday when the Broncos face Melbourne Storm in Sydney. Again no home team for the locals to cheer, but last weekend preliminary final involving the Broncos this game will also be a sellout.

Hopefully it is a fairytale ending for retiring Bronco Shane Webcke.

Unicycle
We are both excited and disappointed. A unicycle competition is to be held in The Gap this weekend (September 30 to October 1) at Payne Road.

It is not that we are massive fans of the unicycle, but this certainly is not something you see everyday. Unfortunately we are out of town over the weekend and will miss the event.

With over 100 entrants expected, we definitely look forward to hearing how the event fared.

Icons of Queensland

Opening today is the latest installment in the Icons of Queensland exhibition. This year is the final year in preparation of the list of icons with significance to the state.

This years list is:

Maroon
Birdsville Races
The Great Barrier Reef
Macadamia Nuts
Quinkan Rock Art
Min Min Lights
Big Pineapple
Lamingtons
Drought master
Cane Toad
Dig Tree
Cambo Waterhole

To be honest I had to look a few up even though I had heard of them. It is expected I am not alone in this.

Quinkan
Reported to be some of the worlds best collections for prehistoric rock paintings. Maybe the reason its not too familiar is the location on Cape York over 2000km from Brisbane and the next closest city being Cairns over 300km away.

Min Min Lights
The Ghost Lights phenomenon according to Professor Jack Pettigrew, of the University of Queensland are the result of an inverted mirage of light sources which are, in some cases, hundreds of kilometers away over the horizon

Dig Tree
Located near Innamincka, the Dig Tree is a reminder of the pioneering spirit that formed the nation. Possibly romantically it is said under the tree was a cache of supplies for the explorers Burke and Wills Expedition of 1861. Both explorers of cause died in the area.

School Holidays

School holidays are here with the benefit for commuters in that traffic has once again magically disappeared.

As the weather has really started to warm up it is expected that most activities will be outdoors during the next two weeks. Wet and Wild, Movie World, Sea World and Dreamworld are all open over the break.

The Powerhouse Museum in New Farm is again running the successful PowerKidz program. Check out their website for full details of all activities on offer.

Swimming Pool Reopening

You may have noticed activity around your local swimming pool recently. Not only have the chairs and shade covers come out of winter storage and the leaves swept away but they have now all again been filled.

All 17 swimming pools operated by Brisbane City Council officially reopen on 23 September.
