Harem Listed

Paddington Turkish restaurant Harem has been named on the Health Department website, with the listing to stand for 2 years after patrons were afflicted with food poisoning.

The eatery was also fined for Food Act infringements.

Interestingly this location is on a corner and as a regular passer-by there have been more than single instances that have put me off becoming a diner.

On one occasion tables were being set before opening and cutlery was dropped to the ground. It should be noted the ground is street pavement area by night. This was picked up and placed back on the table.

Amazingly, even though they were aware they were being watched, events still transpired as described.

Second Curfew

Despite just being announced, a curfew at Brisbane for the second runway appears to be improbable.

Brisbane Airport Corporation stated a curfew was not required as most flights in the proposed curfew time operate over Moreton Bay and not residential areas. Unfortunately sound has the ability to travel considerable distances, particularly at night.

Also a problem for airports and the airlines operating from Brisbane under a curfew is the problem associated with daylight savings. Were a curfew imposed, daylight savings may have to be revisited to counteract the serious economic impact for travellers.

Early flights leave Brisbane at 5.55 during winter and move an hour earlier in daylight savings period allowing business commuters to make 9AM meetings.

On the flip side, research by EPA for the proposed second airport in Sydney at Badgerys Creek showed aircraft movements and the noise associated can reduce residential property values in areas affected by high noise levels.

The possible impact included the reduction, albeit for a small number of residents, of up to 35 percent of property values.

There are some contrasting views from the different players in this curfew game. Airport operators, airlines, travelling public and residents.

Somehow this issue does not feel like it has reached its conclusion.

Anna Changes

Government change is a huge task. Even when there has not been an election with members tossed from their office the flow-on is considerable. Beattie resignation and the installation of Anna Bligh into the top spot is no different.

Already there have been portfolio changes, department changes and office shuffles galore.

One cannot help but think this surely was not last minute as has been suggested.

Imagine the jockeying that must have been happening in recent weeks. Late nights behind closed doors and probably drinks at the bar considering how to play the political game, pun intended.

Not everything though is changed of cause. Letterheads, business cars, all stationary really for those portfolio and department reshuffling.

Websites too need an update before the change is complete.

Anna Bligh was sworn in as the Queensland Premier last Thursday. She was first elected as member for South Brisbane on 15 July 1995.

Chasers and Writers

Last night celebrity newsmen Julian Morrow and Dominic Knight of Chasers were at the Brisbane Writers Festival.

The duo spent an hour conducting interviews of guests at Brisbane Powerhouse. Interviews included Crikey’s Christian Kerr as well as author Tanya Levin.

Julian Morrow is one of the front men, with Dominic Knight a series writer.

For those that live in a vacuum, the Chasers team walked right through the multi million dollar security in Sydney for APEC. Their identities only discovered when one of the team stepped from a vehicle dressed as Osama Bin Laden.

Chasers is on ABC television Wednesday evenings at 9PM.

Brisbane Writers Festival ends today.

Game 2

So the Wallabies v Japan game was a farce. So was the All Blacks first round game. Both with winning team scores up near the century mark. That is good for confidence but its not sport, its not even a contest.

Game two for the Wallabies may be a little different. Millennium Stadium, Cardiff the Wallabies face Wales.

Wales beat Australia here in 2005 by 2 points in a closing moments penalty try.

At the time Scott Johnson was the Wales coach but now sits alongside John Connolly on the Wallabies coaching staff. Hopefully his experience from that game back in 2005 and knowledge of both the Welsh team and Millennium Stadium will be help get the Wallabies over the line this time.

Midnight tonight Brisbane time is kickoff.

Clare Oliver

While the majority of us living in Queensland have lily-white skin pigmentation thanks to our English or Irish heritage we are still sun worshipers.

Queenslanders have one of the highest rates for skin cancer and related illness anywhere in the world. Summer is just around the corner and its prudent to consider the risks of being outside, particularly exposing ourselves to the sun in the middle hours of the day.

Clare Oliver passing earlier in the week is a prudent reminder that not only older people are impacted.

While Clare death is at least in part blamed on solariums that have UV radiation that is up to five times as strong as the midday sun, any exposure places us at risk.

Melanoma, or skin cancer, is Australia’s third most common form of cancer with more than 8,800 Australians diagnosed each year.

More than 1,600 Australians die every year from skin cancer. That figure is almost the same as the national annual road toll.

The Clare Oliver Melanoma Fund has been established with 100 percent of proceeds directed to Melanoma research focusing on research collaborations between leading melanoma research and treatment centres.
