200 Million Toll
Seems both sides of government have agreed the Hale Street Bridge is the correct solution to solve traffic issues for Brisbane. The bridge was approved Tuesday with construction to start in 2007 and completion in 2010. A toll thought to be in the vicinity of $2.50 per crossing will be charged, but only until the estimated 200M construction is paid off. Stop the Hale Street Bridge group is obviously less than impressed with the descision.

Corporate Knights
Its interesting to see our friends at Reading Toronto noting Corporate Knights forum. With the labour force getting older and unemployment rates at all time low, staff are becoming more selective. Corporate responsibilities, or indeed more importantly any lack thereof, are quickly becoming a criteria for employees. Are you listening senior managers?

Wiss House
Located just over an hour away from Brisbane is Wiss House in the small town of Kalbar in the Fassifern Valley. Built in the early 1900s it surely must have been one of the towns most impressive residences.
Now state heritage listed the building was at one stage at risk of being removed and relocated to a more affluent Brisbane location. National Trust assisted in a court case which eventually set legal precedence to prevent removal of culturally significant buildings.

The Labour Market Ate My Babies
Professor Barbara Pocock, Director of Centre for Work and Life University of South Australia was in Brisbane during the week for Clare Burton Memorial Lectures. Professor Pocock has been researching work life balance and particularly the changes this is having in Australia. Her research involved interviewing groups of children from memory that were 10-12 and 17-18 asking about money versus time. In the majority of cases the children wanted more time from their parents. Interestingly this was across all economic backgrounds. Richard Adey of Radio National segment Life Matters has an interesting discussion with the Professor research on Wednesday during his show.
A podcast of the show is available.

Lest We Forget
Originally called Armistice Day from the signing of the armistice Remembrance Day commemorates the end of World War One hostilities on 11 November 1918. It came to symbolise the end of the war and provide an opportunity to remember those who died. Australians now pause at 11am on the 11 day of the 11th month to remember the sacrifice of our fellow men and women from all wars and conflicts during the past 100 years. A wreath laying ceremony is being held at the Shrine of Remembrance in ANZAC Square today. |
